Background for postponement

The Supreme Court directed Allahabad High Court to defer the Ayodhya title suit verdict  for one week. The Supreme Court will hear the plea for deferment of the judgement on September 28. The Court issued notices to the contesting parties on the petition filed by retired bureaucrat Ramesh Chand Tripathi challenging the order of the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court order refusing to defer the verdict in the 60-year-old Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit dispute

VHP Position

VHP spokesman Prakash Sharma, the outfit claimed that Hindu sentiments have been "badly hurt" by the postponement. It also claimed that the Supreme Court stay has "vindicated" the outfit's stand that the dispute could be solved only by facilitating construction of a Ram temple through an Act of Parliament. It said that a high-powered committee of Hindu saints will meet in Delhi tomorrow to decide on future course of action for building a temple of Lord Ram at Ayodhya. "Hindus are surprised and badly hurt by the Supreme Court's stay on pronouncement of verdict on Ayodhya title suit by the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court, which was expected tomorrow. The matter is being delayed despite the fact that both parties to the litigation have not agreed to any compromise solution," the statement said. "The judiciary has been unable to arrive at a solution to the dispute in the last 60 years.

VHP President Ashok Singhal said:  "Moves of conciliation are unacceptable to all the parties involved...previous meetings to resolve the issue through talks have remained futile. The option of talks is not open so far."

"It is not an ordinary property dispute. It is a matter concerning the sentiments, faith and pride of millions of Hindus.The procrastination in arriving at a solution makes the Hindus feel that Ram has got another vanvaas (exile)," the VHP said. "The entire acquired area, including the disputed site, is the place where Sri Ram was born and spent his childhood and no division of this is acceptable to us," the statement said adding, based on the decisions of the meeting of the high-powered committee, "Hindu Samaj will move forward in the direction of constructing a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya."

BJP Position

BJP wants Ram temple at disputed site in Ayodhya. L K Advani has imposed a gag order on all leaders from speaking out publicly on the judgment. BJP to reveal its strategy once the verdict is out.

Congress Position

Congress, however, hailed the apex court's order, saying it always gave first priority to a solution arrived at through mutual agreement. "The Supreme Court has given the order with good intentions and everybody should welcome it. Congress has always believed that the first priority is that the issue is resolved through mutual understanding, goodwill and appreciating the feelings of one another. "If it is not possible, the verdict of the court should be acceptable to all. We believe the court has given the order keeping this spirit in mind and everyone should welcome this," party general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said.

Muslim Position

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi Thursday apprehended that further deferment of the Ayodhya verdict’s pronouncement by the Allahabad High Court would unnecessarily prolong the issue. Ruling out any compromise on the matter, Owaisi said the people of the country have the right to know the truth. ‘Where is the question of compromise when both the parties have already ruled out the same,’ asked Owaisi, reacting to the Supreme Court deferring the Ayodhya verdict till Sep 28.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief told IANS that the deferment was unnecessary as it served no purpose and would, in fact, prolong the issue. ‘Our fear is that if Justice Dharam Veer Sharma (of the high court) retires before the verdict is pronounced, the issue will again get prolonged,’ Owaisi said.

Abdul Rahman Anjaria, national spokesperson for All India Muslim Personal Law Board (J) said: ‘There is no question of another structure coming up there. Once a place has a mosque, it has to to be there forever. We are not in favour of Babar, but we surely are in favour of constructing a mosque. We will fight the legal battle till the last breath.’
