[GHHF] Annadanam was provided to more than 400 people in Chittoor to celebrate the birthday of a young child who lives in Indiana.
Maria Wirth:
“Is it not time that Indians wake up to the treasure hidden in their scriptures which are much older than what western scholars estimated? Those scholars were influenced by the Christian belief that the world was created only some 6000 years back. The Rishis had always thought big and their estimate of the age of (this) universe is collaborated by astronomy. Further, their claim the world is maya was ridiculed, but nowadays nobody ridicules it unless he wants to make a fool of himself.”
Global Hindu Heritage Foundation is very happy to inform that we provided annadanam to more than 400 people on the occasion of the celebration of birthday of a youngster whose parents live in Indiana. Our friend who supports GHHF activities wanted to celebrate his son’s birthday by providing annadanam to the needy in India. He said that we spend so much money in USA to celebrate our Childrens’ birthdays and our own birthdays. Birthday celebrations would cost thousands of dollars for renting function hall, decoration of the hall, and providing the meals. He felt providing meals for the needy is a better way of celebrating the birthday.
Our team in India headed by Sri Srinivas Pinnamaneni, Velu and Reddappa and other volunteers have taken the responsibility to distribute meals in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
Our team performed Archana in Hanuman Temple and also in Rama Temple on the name of this young boy and all the family members with their gotra and nakshatras.
Why Annadanam?
As per Vedas, “Annadanam Samam Danam Trilokeshu Na Vidhathe” meaning Annadanam is supreme, and it cannot be compared to any other charity. Our tradition pronounces that one who does annadanam attains Punya Loka (heaven). In fact, the whole creation depends on food. Taittireya Upanishad says “Annam vai Pranaha”, that means All life force comes from food. In Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna declares, “Annad bhavanti bhutani.” That means all beings evolved from food. Our scriptures talk about “Daridra Narayana” - God dwells in the poor person.
“Gaja turaga Sahasram Gokulam koti danam
Kanaka Rajatha patram Methini sagarantham
Upaya kula vishuttam Koti kanya pradanam
Nahi nahi bahu danam Annadanam samanam”
MEANING: Donating 1000 elephants & horses, donating 10 million cows, donating any number of vessels of silver and gold, donating the entire land till sea, offering the entire services of the clan, helping in the marriage of 10 million women, all this is never ever equal to Annadanam, the feeding of hungry and needy.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says, “Annad bhavanti bhootani”. It means that food sustains all creation. Satisfying a person’s hunger brings good karma in this world as well as the next.
Annadanam is not limited to humans alone. One should also feed animals and plants, as they, too, are part of creation. The three stories below reveal Annadanam’s importance.
Annadanam, offering food to the needy and the visiting guests in many Ashrams, has been a common practice for thousands of years. More importance is given to providing meals for the people who are hungry. Providing meals at many Hindu Temples and Ashrams is a custom. Our Temples provide Naivedyam to Gods on a regular basis as we believe the presence of Paramatma/God in the installed Deities. Similarly, we believe there is a divinity in all the creatures – humans as well as non-human. Sharing food is considered the sacred duty in Hindu culture. At almost all the festivals, the organizers provide meals. Thus, annadanam is given the highest importance because of our belief that God lives as Atman in each one of us.
