Vanchinathan (1886–1911), born Vanchinathan Iyer in Senkottai, was a key revolutionary figure in the Madras Presidency. A government employee in the Forest Department, he sacrificed his professional stability to join the clandestine struggle against British rule. He was a prominent member of the Bharata Mata Association, a secret society founded by Nilakanta Brahmachari, which aimed to liberate India from colonial bondage through armed insurrection.
The Role of the Bharata Mata Association
The Bharata Mata Association was established with the objective of inciting a widespread revolt against the British, similar to the 1857 uprising. Its ideology was heavily influenced by the radical nationalist discourse emanating from Bengal and the Swadeshi movement.
•    The organization focused on recruiting youth and indoctrinating them with the ideals of ‘Purna Swaraj’.
•    It maintained secret networks to spread nationalist literature and coordinate actions against British officials who were perceived as oppressive.
•    Vanchinathan was deeply influenced by the revolutionary zeal of Subramania Bharati and other nationalist leaders, which solidified his commitment to the militant path.
The Assassination of Robert Ashe
The primary catalyst for Vanchinathan’s revolutionary action was the colonial policy pursued by Robert Ashe, the District Collector of Tirunelveli. Ashe was viewed as a symbol of colonial oppression, particularly due to his role in the suppression of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, which was founded by the nationalist leader V.O. Chidambaram Pillai.
•    On June 17, 1911, Vanchinathan intercepted Robert Ashe at the Maniyachi Junction railway station.
•    He shot Ashe at close range inside a first-class carriage, resulting in the collector’s immediate death.
•    Following the assassination, Vanchinathan fled the scene and hid in a nearby latrine. Realizing that he was surrounded by police, he turned his pistol on himself and committed suicide to avoid capture.
Historical Significance and Impact
The assassination of Robert Ashe was a landmark event in the revolutionary history of Southern India. It demonstrated that the spirit of militant nationalism was not confined to Bengal, Punjab, or Maharashtra but had deeply penetrated the Madras Presidency.
•    The incident sent shockwaves through the colonial administration, prompting an immediate and severe crackdown on nationalist organizations in the region.
•    The subsequent police investigation led to the ‘Tirunelveli Conspiracy Case’, where several associates of the Bharata Mata Association were arrested and prosecuted.
•    Despite the failure of the conspiracy to trigger a larger uprising, the act turned Vanchinathan into a folk hero of the resistance, symbolizing the refusal of the Indian populace to accept colonial subjugation silently. (Source: IAS psot)
A letter with the below words was recovered from his pocket,
The mlechas of England having captured our country, tread over the sanathana dharma of the Hindus and destroy them. Every Indian is trying to drive out the English and get swarajyam and restore sanathana dharma. Our Raman, Sivaji, Krishnan, Guru Govindan, Arjuna ruled our land protecting all dharmas and in this land they are making arrangements to crown George V, a mlecha, and one who eats the flesh of cows. Three thousand Madrasees have taken a vow to kill George V as soon as he lands in our country. In order to make others know our intention, I who am the least in the company, have done this deed this day. This is what everyone in Hindustan should consider it as his duty.   sd/-, R. Vanchi Aiyar, Shencottah.
